Mountain Gait Acres

A personal journey in the raising, training, and riding of Tennessee Walking Horses: natural horsemanship and basic classical training for the trail horse.

Never Take a Day for Granted
If horses are trying to teach us one thing, it is to be genuinely mindful and aware in our daily lives. They are the embodiment of a peaceful soul, anxious to please, to serve, and to carry their share of the relationship. They team up with us.

In return, they expect us to be vigilant, to look out for them, and to lead the herd safely. Riding down the trail as horse and rider, we are an amalgam of prey and predator mind, of fast feelings and fast reactions, of piercing intellect and energy matched with striking power and elegance.

To ride down the trail on horseback is to enter a state of grace. This rare opportunity is available only to those of us who love and ride horses. It is through a profound partnership with our horses that we experience the heightened consciousness known as horsemanship.

So let's pinch ourselves from time to time. Give a prayer of thanks to the natural world that has afforded us this unique opportunity to gain access to the heart and soul of an animal as noble as the horse, Let us pray we can be inspired to be worthy of the one who carries us.
